H. Bryan Neel, MD, PhD, was awarded the second annual Patrick E. Brookhouser, MD, Award for Excellence, intended to recognize a Triological Society fellow who has made significant scientific or service contributions to the Triological Society and to the specialty of otolaryngology.
Dr. Neel is professor and chairman emeritus of the department of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School. He is also regent emeritus of the University of Minnesota and trustee emeritus of the University of Minnesota Foundation.
Triological Society President Jonas Johnson, MD, called him a pioneer in head and neck cancer and immunology research. He guided the Mayo Clinic otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery department to national prominence and published 230 original manuscripts.
Dr. Neel thanked his wife, Ingrid, and said he owed the award to the society as a whole. “I really don’t look at this as an award to me, because if you weren’t here I wouldn’t be standing here,” he said. “And I have gotten so many great friends and acquaintances through the Triological Society that it’s just unbelievable. I just feel so good about knowing so many of you.”
