The Triological Society has released a statement supporting inclusion, diversity, and commitment to justice and respect:
During the past few months, our country has gone through challenging times experiencing a pandemic that we, as physicians, as well as other healthcare professionals, have devoted our full attention and energy to combat. We have performed admirably, and our work and sacrifices have reinforced and upheld the noble legacy of our profession.
We are now confronting another challenge that, in many ways, may be more destructive to our country. The events of the past week cannot, and should not, be ignored or cast aside. The values and pride that Americans traditionally cherish involving social equality and justice have to be re-examined. We should not tolerate injustice based on prejudice directed toward any segment of our society. It is time for our profession and, specifically, our Triological Society, to declare that we are committed to justice and respect for all. Ignoring or remaining silent to the inequalities that exist does not acknowledge that, indeed, now is the time for self-reflection and improvement. Our people, our profession, our specialty, and the Triological Society should clearly and unequivocally support inclusion and diversity to allow this country to live up to its professed ideals. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic or popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.”
Now is the time to follow this course. The Triological Society declares its support for justice, opportunity, respect, diversity, and inclusion to move forward with the necessary dignity, fairness, and opportunity that all people deserve.
